About the Agency

The USDA initiated the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) in 1983 to collect, analyze, and disseminate data on animal health, management, and productivity across the United States. The NAHMS program conducts national studies on the health and health management of United States domestic livestock, poultry, and aquaculture populations. These studies are designed to meet the information needs of the industries associated with these commodities, as identified by people within those industries.
NAHMS national studies provide essential information on animal health and management to decisionmakers, including producers, researchers, and policymakers. Each animal group is studied on a rotating basis, providing up-to-date and trend information needed to monitor animal health, support trade decisions, assess research and product development needs, answer questions for consumers, and set policy.
NAHMS is committed to protecting the confidentiality of the participants who voluntarily take part in NAHMS national studies. NAHMS relies on voluntary participation and provides protection of collected data under CIPSEA (P.L. 115-435, Title III) or as confidential business information (19 CFR 201.6) as required by the study. Data collected by the NAHMS program is for statistical purposes only.
NAHMS allows eligible researchers the opportunity to gain access to restricted data files for statistical research projects onsite at the NAHMS office in Fort Collins, CO. In addition, NAHMS offers the ability to perform special request runs with the data, providing custom statistical summary information using data from any of its past national studies. For more information or to request a special request statistical summary, please contact: email NAHMS@usda.gov, call 1-866-907-8190, or visit the NAHMS webpage at https://www.aphis.usda.gov/nahms.
